Wastespresso - Startup

Details Assets Critical Achievements Team
Wastespresso is a waste management company that manages and up-cycles coffee grounds by collecting them from headquarters, offices, and hotels. From weekly operations to monthly carbon emission reporting, we aim to include businesses on a sustainable agenda. The coffee waste collected weekly is compounded with biodegradable plastic raw material to produce a bio-raw material substitute for plastics. From automotive to home appliances, our products have been delivered to the needs of various sectors. The coffee grounds in our portfolio are up-cycled into biodegradable and reusable products such as coffee cups, straws, and cutlery sets.
Problem

Although the coffee is the second largest commodity traded globally, there is a lack of awareness and accessibility for managing the spent coffee grounds which cause high carbon emissions. Also there is a lack of bio-raw materials and products.

Solution

We aim to reduce the carbon emissions caused by spent coffee grounds by collecting the coffee waste from our customers weekly. We prepare monthly "Carbon Emission Reduction Report" for each customer on what environmental hazard we have achieved in a month. Besides the waste management service, the spent coffee grounds are up-cycled into bio-raw materials as a substitute for plastics. The raw material is viable for various sectors. In our product portfolio, we produce reusable cups, straws, and cutlery sets that help us reduce plastic waste and foster eco-friendly practices.

Wastespresso’s reference market is the global bioplastic market, which has a 14.57 billion dollar market size in 2023. It is expected to grow with %17 CAGR. Our market segment consists of companies with a sustainability agenda or willingness to have one.

When Wastespresso expands its operations by fostering further awareness of spent coffee grounds, optimized prices for bio-raw materials and upcycled products will be reached. Competitive prices will render bio-raw materials and upcycled products more desirable in the plastics and packaging sectors because they will perform double advantage: financially viable and practically sustainable. On the other hand, durable and multi-use products will be economically beneficial in the long run, instead of purchasing single-use materials constantly.

Wastespresso uses special software to provide comprehensive carbon reporting based on 267 parameters in the production process.

The production process of the Espresso Granule raw material is a compounding procedure of dried coffee waste and bio-plastic raw materials. For each product or Espresso Granule produced for customized use, the compounding process necessitates a new formulation for how much coffee waste to use and which bio-plastic raw material to use.
